Cumming City Center is not the old downtown. It is a new district the City built on Canton Highway, and it is where most of Cumming’s free events now happen. Here is what it is, how it works and what is there.
What is Cumming City Center?
- The Cumming City Center is a City-built district of about 75 acres between Canton Highway and Sawnee Drive, behind Forsyth Central High School. It has shops, restaurants, the Lou Sobh Amphitheater, green space and trails. City of Cumming: Cumming City Center
- The City Center is at 423 Canton Road on State Route 20 West (Canton Hwy.), about 1.5 miles west of downtown Cumming. Cumming City Center: Visit Us
- The City of Cumming built the City Center and owns its buildings, which it leases to retail and dining tenants. The City says the leases give it a steady income so municipal property taxes never have to be levied. City of Cumming: Our Community; Cumming City Center: About
- The City credits the City Center to the vision of Mayor Troy Brumbalow, who wanted to bring back some of the small-town charm lost in decades of rapid growth. Cumming City Center: Visit Us; City of Cumming: Cumming City Center
When did it open?
The City Center broke ground on Aug. 8, 2019. The City held its ribbon cutting on June 24, 2022 and said that was not a grand opening: it marked the end of the City's construction phase and the start of tenant build-outs. (City of Cumming: City Center Ribbon Cutting event; Cumming City Center milestones, checked 2026-10-17)
What is there?
- The plan calls for about 117,000 square feet of retail space and the Lou Sobh Amphitheater next to a reflection pool. It also includes a fountain ringed by personalized bricks, pocket parks, a putting course, a steam engine display, and boardwalks over the Kelly Mill Branch stream and its wetlands. City of Cumming: Cumming City Center
- The open-air Lou Sobh Amphitheater has five tiers of grassy terrace seating, top-tier bar seating and a 2,227-square-foot covered stage in front of a reflecting pond with a walkable bridge. Cumming City Center: Lou Sobh Amphitheater & Reflection Pond
- In 2023 the City moved the Cumming Veterans War Memorial from 301 Veterans Memorial Blvd. to the City Center, where it now stands around the reflecting pool behind the Lou Sobh Amphitheater. Memorial Day ceremonies start at 11 a.m. on the Friday before Memorial Day weekend. City of Cumming: Veterans War Memorial
- The free Fire Museum at the City Center shows the City's vintage 1980s fire truck, along with old Cumming Fire Department equipment, newspaper clippings and memorials. It is entered through Myth & Legend coffee and is open only during that shop's hours. Cumming City Center: Fire Museum

Questions
Is the Cumming City Center the same as downtown Cumming?
No. Historic downtown is the courthouse square, with City Hall, the 1915 bandstand and the old schoolhouse that now holds the School Street Playhouse. The Cumming City Center is a separate district the City built at 423 Canton Road (State Route 20 West), about 1.5 miles west of downtown and behind Forsyth Central High School. It has shops, restaurants, the Lou Sobh Amphitheater and trails. Most visitors see both.

Who owns the Cumming City Center and when did it open?
The City of Cumming built the City Center and owns its buildings, which it leases to shops and restaurants. The City says that lease income helps it avoid a municipal property tax. Ground was broken on Aug. 8, 2019. The City held a ribbon cutting on June 24, 2022 and said it was not a grand opening but the start of tenant build-outs, so the businesses opened one at a time after that.
