Plan your downtown day
Pick how long you have, what you like and where you want to start. The planner chooses sourced stops, walks you round one centre at a time, tells you when the next part is a drive, and adds free parking if you are coming by car.
Or start from one of three ready-made plans:
The courthouse square on foot
An hour or two around the historic square: the bandstand, City Hall, the 1923 schoolhouse and tacos.
- Forsyth County Courthouse and historic square (101 E. Courthouse Square) — Start on the square: the 2015 courthouse, the 1915 bandstand and City Hall's clock tower are all in sight of each other.
- Cumming Bandstand (Main and Dahlonega streets, courthouse square) — Built in 1915 by John Robbs for concerts by the Cumming Brass Band; on the National Register since 2002.
- Cumming City Hall (100 Main St.) — Completed in 2002, with parapets, archways and a clock tower borrowed from the courthouse that burned in the 1970s.
- Tam's School Street Playhouse (101 School St.) — A theatre inside the 1923 Cumming Public School, which the City bought and restored in the late 1990s.
- Beto's Tacos (125 Tribble Gap Rd., Suites 101-102) — Mexican street food.
An evening at City Center
Dinner, the amphitheater lawn and ice cream, all within the City Center.
- Cumming City Center (423 Canton Road) — The City-built district of about 75 acres on Canton Highway: shops, restaurants, green space, trails and the amphitheater.
- Homestead Kitchen & Craft Bar (420 Vision Dr., Suite 101 (Cumming City Center)) — The Loft @ Homestead, a 21+ rooftop bar with live music and trivia, is upstairs.
- Lou Sobh Amphitheater and reflection pond (Cumming City Center, 423 Canton Road) — Grass terraces facing a covered stage across a reflecting pond with a walkable bridge; the free concerts happen here.
- Juke N Jive Creamery (441 Vision Dr., Suite G101 (Cumming City Center)) — More than 30 ice cream flavors, including dairy-free, plus fudge and baked desserts.
Square, City Center and Sawnee
Both downtowns in a morning, then the drive up to Sawnee Mountain Preserve.
- Forsyth County Courthouse and historic square (101 E. Courthouse Square) — Start on the square: the 2015 courthouse, the 1915 bandstand and City Hall's clock tower are all in sight of each other.
- Cumming City Center (423 Canton Road) — The City-built district of about 75 acres on Canton Highway: shops, restaurants, green space, trails and the amphitheater.
- Myth & Legend Coffee (431 Vision Dr., Suite F101A (Cumming City Center)) — Doubles as the entrance to the free City Center Fire Museum during shop hours.
- Sawnee Mountain Preserve (4075 Spot Road (visitor center)) — The county preserve just north of town: more than 11 miles of trails, including routes to the Indian Seats rock overlook. Dogs are not allowed on the trails.
Every stop comes from our sourced list of downtown places (checked 2026-10-17). Walking and driving figures are straight-line estimates from OpenStreetMap coordinates, not measured routes. Time per stop is your chosen time split evenly. Check each place's hours before you go.

Cumming is the county seat of Forsyth County, about 40 miles north of Atlanta, on the western side of Lake Lanier. The historic downtown grew up around the courthouse square, and the City's newer Cumming City Center sits about 1.5 miles west on Canton Highway. Sawnee Mountain Preserve rises just north of town, and Lake Lanier parks such as Mary Alice Park are a short drive east.

How far is Cumming from Atlanta?
About 40 miles. New Georgia Encyclopedia puts Cumming 40 miles north of Atlanta, and the City-run Cumming Fairgrounds says it is "just 40 miles north of Atlanta." Most visitors drive up Georgia 400. The City's "Cumming Home" water tower marks Exit 14, the exit City Center businesses tell visitors to use. Drive times depend heavily on GA 400 traffic, so we don't quote one.
